1. The Centre has been pushing states to adopt the model Agriculture Produce and Livestock Marketing Act, 2017 and the model Agriculture Produce and Livestock Contract Farming Act, 2018 which allow private capital within the APMC set-up.
2. Apart from these, 18 states, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, have in recent months allowed corporates to set up private mandis.
3. For several years, India has been in negotiation with the WTO (World Trade Organisation) for an Agreement on Agriculture(AOA), which forms the basis of many free trade deals. Western nation have long demanded that India limit agriculture subsidies for an AoA. In 2015, negotiators arrived at a peace clause, under which MSPs are classified as amber issues, which western nation say may distort free trade.
4. Farmers are protesting against all the ordinances that have been passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Farmers are also worried that capitalists may take away their property from them. But it is less known fact that Communists( most of the union are communist) also dissolve private property. Both capitalists and socialists are not in the favor of farmers. They must decide themselves to save their land and water.
